The best time I’d had with an archery game before this week was playing Archer 3D, which came packaged in the ever-expanding All-in-1 Gamebox. I thought the use of tilt controls and simple yet challenging gameplay were especially accessible and fun to play. For awhile, it seemed Archer 3D might be the final word in a highly-specialized portion of the App Store.

But fast forward to Bowmaster, and that has all changed. Here we get an immersive, truly 3D experience that does away with gimmicky controls and provides an iPhone archery sim that would be hard to improve upon. The stages are expansive, lush, and highly varied, and the fluidity of the controls allows you to focus all your efforts on beating the opponent and let your inner Robin Hood take control.

Your objective is to become the “bowmaster.” What does that entail? Well, there is a group of archers known as the Merry Five, and they stand in your way . Defeat each of them twice (in order of difficulty) to become the bowmaster and have your name inscribed with others who have completed the challenge. The tutorial gets you started, and within about a minute you’ll understand the controls and be anxious to get started. The first opponent is Wilber the Novice, followed by Bjorn the Mighty, Fitzroy the Swift, Albert the Accurate, and Leonard the Able. Each has a different strength, and by the time you’re challenging Fitzroy the Swift, things get difficult.
