About Digital Theft and Spam in Internet

This post is entirely dedicated to people who steal our content and present it on their websites as their own. We will keep this report as short as possible, as we don't want to waste our precious time for those kinds of things. Nonetheless, the community should be aware of what's going on behind the scenes, and people who play against the rules should be revealed. So, let's get straight to the point.

Veselin Nedev

Mr. Veselin Nedev from Haskovo, Bulgaria owns the website www.androidfreeware.net. He is also known as Veselin Nedeff, baksanir, or goes under his company's name, Mobile Network OOD. As you might have guessed, his site targets the same subject and audience as ours. The sad thing about Mr. Nedev and his site, is that he steals articles and reviews from our site. He then publishes them on his site, without any mention or credentials to the original source. Moreover, he hotlinks to the Android Package Files (APK) located on our server. Therefore, not only does he steal our content, but he also steals our traffic.

A few days ago, we sent him an email and demanded to remove the articles. Here is the mail exchange:

Letter No. 1: To Mr. Nedev

Hello Mobile Network OOD and Mr. Nedev,

this is informal notification of copyright infringement from your side
against our online resource Android-Freeware.Org. It came to our
attention that you or your editors do not hesitate to use materials
from our site at your site www.androidfreeware.net. We want to remind
you that according to our terms, all contributions of our users and
materials on the site are subject of our copyright. Copying of these
digital materials are persuaded by laws in most of the countries of
the World as well as in Bulgaria and Europe. In case to reproduce
these materials you need to obtain our written permission before
re-publishing.

We urge you to IMMEDIATELY REMOVE all our materials from your site and
in the future not to use our site as your free source of information.
Please, don't forget also that rewriting of copyrighted materials are
concerned by copyright laws as derivative work and when distributed
under own brand without prior permission of the copyright owners also
violates the law.

With best regards,
SFD Team

Subject: Re: Copyright Violation

Not clever of you Veselin to play games with this. Just look at your
site and at ours. It's clear that you copy most of our descriptions
and files.

1) E.g. search for the exact phase at Google: "Five is a streaming
media framework designed to efficiently expose media hosted on your
home PC via your cell phone's data connection"
2) Where did you get for example the "ImageFile" application? This was
contributed by our member solely and exclusively for our resource.
3) Search for "This is an implementation of the classic Game Snake, in
which you control a serpent roaming around the garden looking for
apples"
4) and so on and on and on...

Please keep in mind we are not going to sit and wait or negotiate with
you. You've been notified and this is our duty by the law to notify
you. If you are not complying we are taking legal actions.

With best regards,
SFD Team

1) I've changed the phrase for Five
2) I saw it on your page and looked here after this
http://code.google.com/p/jjil/
3) This phrase is changed too,
4) no idea

Make whatever you want, i think we already resolved the issue. And I am not
playing games.

:) First of all i think i fixed all the issues you point in the previous
message. In your first email i asked you politely to show me the reasons and
the copyrighted materials and you did it with your second. I am just trying
to make everything clear. If that is bad answer and attitude ok.

This email exchange demonstrates what a shameless liar Mr. Vaselin Nedev is. At this time, his site www.androidfreeware.net, contains totally 24 freeware articles. 18 of them are copy-paste duplicates of the same articles on our site.

Below, is a comparison of the original articles from our site. On the top are the articles from our site, and the stolen articles that were published on www.androidfreeware.net, are below the originals. The duplicates are presented as screenshots (in case if he´changes it later).

Saijo George

Mr. Saijo George from Melbourne, Australia, who is originally from Kerala, India, owns another Android related blog, www.freeware4android.com. He is also known under the nickname, PPCInformer, and sometimes represents himself as a Freeware4Android Team.

He first came to our attention, when we recognized a lot of our articles on his new blog. Mr. George didn't bother to provide links to the original articles. With that being said, his actions caused us to send him a take down letter, written in a similar style as before. Here is the email exchange:

Dear Mr. George and Freeware4Android Team,

we think you misunderstood our notification in the previous email.
This was not initiated to discuss or negotiate with you regarding the
fact of the copyright law violation. The message was to warn you and
give a chance to REMOVE ALL COPIED CONTENT IMMEDIATELY from your site.
Rewriting of the texts will not help you either. This is considered as
derivative work and still violates our copyright.

We friendly advise you to comply with our demands to save your good
name and prevent yourself from legal actions.

With best regards,
SFD Team

To SFD Team

I am not sure what you mean by REMOVE ALL COPIED CONTENT IMMEDIATELY from
your site. If you have look @ the content you will see that the Source is
given for each post. If you click on it takes you to the Source of the
Information and , if you find there is a Source from Your Site I will be
glad to remove it.

At the time of writing, the blog of Mr. George contained a total of 29 freeware applications for Android, and 20 of them were simply copy-pasted from our site. He claims to take descriptions of all programs from the sites of their developers. Instead, most of the articles (20 out of 29) were our unique reviews of those programs, in which he copied from our site. Below is the comparison of original and copied articles. The duplicates are presented as screenshots.

After a brief research of Mr. George's activities on the Internet, we surprisingly discovered that he is not only a copy-paster, but he is a "copy-paste entrepreneur," an aggressive self-promoter, and a search engine spammer.

We feel that Mr. Saijo George is a copy-paste entrepreneur, because he hires people for $20/month to copy-paste at least 5 articles per day from the Internet, into his blog. Yes, you read it right, he pays someone $20 per month, to post a total of 150 articles into his blogs. You can read it yourself here ("PPCInformer" is Mr. Saijo George). Screenshot provided.

We also feel that Mr. Saijo George is an aggressive self-promoter, because he became a volunteer editor at Directory Mozilla (DMOZ). And we feel that he volunteered with the intent (screenshot) to add his PocketPC-related blog, www.1800pocketpc.com, to the Pocket PC category of this reputable and influential directory. Not only is this against the DMOZ regulations, it also tricks search engines like Google into giving Mr. George's blog a higher ranking. Here are the screenshots of the corresponding DMOZ category, before and after his addition.

We think that Mr. Saijo George is a search engine spammer because he creates spam blogs (splogs). These blogs syndicate his RSS feeds, and provide backlinks to his main blogs. This is intended to trick search engines, and make his websites rank higher than they really are. These are a few of Mr. George's spam blogs that we are aware of:
Strangely enough, back in July 2008, the time when Mr. Saijo George just started his Android blog, our website was a target of a massive click-bomb attack. The attack lasted quite long, and intended to cause the project financial damage. This was probably just a coincidence though.

Other copy-paste sites

There are some other sites, which use our directory as their free content supplier. However, by them doing this, they are harming our project and disturbing its development and growth. Not to mention, they are also fooling their visitors by making them believe that they are visiting the original source of information. To name a few:
Not only will we follow such sites publicly, but we will we use all legal methods to prevent them from using our work without our permission.
